Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1665-LW 1/24 thaler KM-264
This specimen was lot 5618 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. 1/24 Taler 1665, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod am 15. März. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Elbeshausen, Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 68, Dortmund 2014, Nr. 748. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, 1/24 thaler of 1665, Clausthal mint, on the duke's death on March 15. Extremely fine.)"
On the death of Christian Ludwig in 1665, a series of commemoratives was struck, including a 1/24 thaler (KM 264, shown here), one eighth thaler (KM 265), one quarter thaler (KM 266), one half thaler (KM 267) and single thaler (KM 268). Another 1/24 thaler, with a leaping stallion reverse, was struck in 1665. His successor, Georg Wilhelm, was the last duke of the line. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle then passed to Hannover in 1705.
