Künker sale 354, lot 5613

This specimen was lot 5613 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,644 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Reichstaler 1665, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 15. März. R Feine Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Waldemar Wruck 16, Berlin 1965, Nr. 1309. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, thaler of 1665, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on March 15. Rare, fine patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

On the death of Christian Ludwig in 1665, a series of commemoratives was struck, including a 1/24 thaler (KM 264), one eighth thaler (KM 265), one quarter thaler (KM 266), one half thaler (KM 267) and single thaler (KM 268, shown here). This thaler also comes with initials "LW". His successor, Georg Wilhelm, was the last duke of the line. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle then passed to Hannover in 1705.
