Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1648-HS 4 thaler Dav-LS145
This specimen was lot 42220 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). 4 Talers, 1648-HS. Clausthal Mint. Christian Ludwig. PCGS EF-40. A very elusive 4 Talers, this example features an attractive design, with even circulation on the raised design elements. While many examples of the type feature damage, this specimen escapes that fate, with nice appeal and soft golden tone. An example that will capture the attention of numerous bidders." This huge coin was accompanied by a five thaler (Dav-LS144), triple thaler (Dav-LS146), several double thalers (Dav-6496, -A6498, -6499), several thalers (Dav-6488, Dav-6498, Dav-6500) and two half thalers (KM 164 and KM 191).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver; this specimen 116.60 g.
