In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. The cruzeiro itself was replaced in 1967 by the "novo cruzeiro," worth 1000 old cruzeiros. The "novo cruzeiro" lasted until 1985. This ten cruzados was issued 1987-88 as part of the reform of 1986-89. The currency would be reformed several more times before the reform of 1994 finally stuck. These dull, low relief stainless steel coins are very difficult to photograph.
