In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. The cruzeiro itself was replaced in 1967 by the "novo cruzeiro," worth 1000 old cruzeiros. The "novo cruzeiro" lasted until 1985. This ten cruzeiross was struck at 5.35 g in 1980-84 and then reduced to 4.79 g for 1985-86, then the cruzeiro was abolished entirely in favor of the cruzado which itself would last only until 1989. These dull, low relief stainless steel coins are very difficult to photograph.
