This circulating commemorative, one of three issued, marked the centennial of the abolition of slavery in Brazil, the last country in the western hemisphere to do so. The legacy of this act is mixed, as racism remains deeply entrenched there. These coins were issued during a period of hyperinflation and their circulating life was brief.
Recorded mintage: 200,000.
Specification: stainless steel, 9.95 g, 31 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 610.
