Brazil 1752 1000 reis

Eliasberg lot 1166

The first specimen was lot 1166 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $805. The catalog description^[1] noted, "1752 1,000 reis. Types as above. IOSEPHUS in legend. Light yellow gold with remarkable lustre and some reflectivity. Adjustment marks below date and through crown. A very high quality piece. From B. Max Mehl's sale of the Thomas W. Voetter Collection, January 1943, Lot 216 (a 2 piece lot)." The type was struck 1749, 1752, 1771 and 1774 without mintmark. It is the smallest of the "moedas provinciales" series.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.01 g, 0.917 fine gold, .059 troy oz AGW; the first specimen: 2.11 grams, 17.70 mm diameter.
