This silver 640 réis was minted at the Lisbon mint for Brazil in 1752 and 1756. This coin would have traded in the 18th century as two-thirds of a Spanish dollar. The specimen was lot 20388 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I 640 Reis 1752, Fine, with rim bumps and reverse abrasions. The first-year issue of a two-year type, with both years being quite rare and very difficult to find." This type is rare; the contemporary Rio issue of 1751-55 (KM 170.1) is much more available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 19.32 g, 0.917 fine silver, .570 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 170.2, Russo 167.
