Brabant 1639(a) ducaton Dav-4454
This specimen was lot 965 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €300 (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1639, Bruxelles. Deuxième type. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Écu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or.Rare. Griffes. Patine foncée. Presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, Brussels mint, Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: two lions support large crowned royal arms, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Rare, scratches, nice patina, about Very Fine.)"
The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (hand mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark, shown here), is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
