Brabant 1640(a) ducaton Dav-4454
This specimen was lot 75757 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Ducaton, 1640. Brussels Mint. Philip IV. NGC AU-55. A well-made example of the type with nearly the full legend readable without magnification and delightful steel gray patina." The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (with hand mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark, shown here), is scarce but not rare. In 1636, the king's bust was revised to show a more mature visage. The multiple ducatons, which include double and quadruple issues, are all rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver.
