Brabant 1640(h) ducaton Dav-4454
The specimen shown was lot 137 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 350 euros (about US$577 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1640. Amberes. 1 ducatón. Extraordinario ejemplar. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (Antwerp ducaton of 1640, extraordinary example, original luster, very rare thus, choice extremely fine.)
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4457). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, .985 troy oz ASW.
