Schulman sale 375, lot 1050

This specimen was lot 1050 in Schulman sale 375 (Amsterdam, April 2023), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,851 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, PHILIPPE IV 1621–1665, Double souverain d 'or. 1640 sur 1639. Bruxelles. Buste couronné avec mince collet à droite, en haut tête entre le millésime .PHIL. IIII. D. G. HISP. ET. INDIAR. REX. R/. écu couronné entouré du collier de la Toison d 'Or ·ARCHID· AVST· DV – X· BVRG· BRAB· Z- C. RRR. Surfrappe inédit. Ongepubliceerde overslag. Griffes sur l 'avers, petite irrégularitée sur le planchet. Krasjes op voorzijde, enige onegelmatigheid in het plaatje. Prachtig. Surfrappe net non répertoriée dans la literature. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, double souverain d'or, 1640/39, Brussels mint. Obverse: crowned bust right with flat collar; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, unpublished overdate, scratches on the obverse, some planchet irregularity, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1637-47 and features a middle-aged bust of the king n a flat collar. The previous issue (Fr-103) depicted him in a ruffed collar.

Recorded mintage: 42,000 from Brussels plus 8,000 from Antwerp.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold.
