Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1527
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1527 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €650 (about US$926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AV albertin, 1600, Maastricht. Avec étoile et croisette au revers. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix de Bourgogne accostée de la date, sous une couronne, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Rare Petit coup au revers. Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 62, 24 juin 2000, 991. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, gold albertin of 1600, Maastricht mint, with star and crosslet on the reverse. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: Burgundian cross divides the date, jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Rare, small nick on the reverse, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1600-11 as part of a short lived monetary reform. The star marks this as a product of the Maastricht mint. The albertin d'or was two-thirds of a ducat. Double albertins d'or exist. The city of Maastricht, on the banks of the Meuse or Maas river, is actually not in Brabant but in the duchy of Limburg. However, the obverse legend "BVR·ET·BRA" indicates that the coinage was intended to circulate in Brabant.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.92 g, 0.792 fine gold, this specimen 2,72 g.
