Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 800

This specimen was lot 800 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$975 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AV double albertin, 1600. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix de Bourgogne accostée de la date, sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. DOM· TOVR en fin de légende. Double frappe. Très Beau à Superbe. (lordship of Tournai, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, gold double albertin of 1600. Obverse: crowned arms, Order chain around; reverse: Burgundian cross divides the date under a crown, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece, "DOM· TOVR" at the end of the legend. Double struck, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1600-09 as part of a coinage reform (see Brabant (1600-11) 2 ducats Fr-84 for more details). Of the three mints that struck this type, Antwerp (hand mintmark) is the most common. A double albertin d'or was four-thirds of a ducat.
