Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1104

This specimen was lot 1104 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €160 (about US$202 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR stoter (huitième de florin), 1600, Anvers. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix fleuronnée, cantonnée de deux lions et de deux couronnes. Rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver stoter or one-eighth florin of 1600, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: floriate cross cantonned with two lions and two crowns. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1600 at Antwerp and at Bruges in Flanders. It was part of the coinage reform of Albert and Isabella which attempted to revive the devastated Spanish Netherlands. It must not have been successful as this denomination was quickly dropped.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.42 g, 0.417 fine silver, this specimen 3,35 g.
