This specimen was lot 34419 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $229. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Soles, 1844-PTSR. NGC AU-58. Toned." This type was struck in substantial quantities 1841-46 after Bolivian independence. It is common. This coin often comes poorly struck on bad planchets; this specimen is above average. Later eight soles (or sueldos; the sources do not agree) were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
