This specimen was lot 30371 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $528.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1844-R, MS62 NGC. A quality example with sharply struck features and appealing old-time toning. Undamaged examples of these tiny denominations are highly elusive. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." This type was struck 1841-47 and is seldom seen, despite the low catalog value.
