Bolivia 1842-PTS LR 1/2 scudo
This specimen was lot 1206 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,331. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AV 1/2 Escudo. Potosí mint, Luis de Aquilar and Rafael Mariano Bustillo, assayers. Dated 1842 PTS LR. 'BOLIAR' error. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Choice lustrous BU with lovely strike. Faint orange peel toning. Error not shown on holder. Only one other graded, at AU 58. Extremely rare. Purchased from Pat Johnson, June 1970." This type was struck 1841-47 and is seldom seen, despite the low catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
