Bolivia 1845-PTS R 8 soles
This specimen was lot 30017 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bolivia: Republic 8 Soles 1845 PTS-R MS61 NGC, Potosi mint, Clad in a firmly set metallic patina with underlying glints of argent luster that confirm a fully Mint State preservation. One of only a handful of examples to certify in uncirculated condition across both NGC and PCGS to date. From the Cape Coral Collection of Spain and Latin America." This type was struck in substantial quantities 1841-46 after Bolivian independence. It is common. This coin often comes poorly struck on bad planchets; this specimen is above average. Later eight soles (or sueldos; the sources do not agree) were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27 g, 0.903 fine silver, edge reeded.
