This specimen was lot 3270 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Soles, 1843-LR. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Nice strike with nearly full mint luster." This type was struck in substantial quantities 1841-46 after Bolivian independence. It is common. This coin often comes poorly struck on bad planchets; this specimen is above average. Later eight soles (or sueldos; the sources do not agree) were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
