Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72453
SB1123-72453r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72453 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Sol, 1829-PTS JM. Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-64. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just one example, this near-Gem stunner offers appealing almond-gray toning along with exceptional underlying brilliance." This is the most common date of the three year type (1827-29) but it still seldom seen. The 1830 issue (KM 94a), which was only 0.667 fine, was struck with a frozen date until the 1850's. The debased coin flooded Bolivia's neighbors, arousing loud protests to no avail.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-94.
