Bolivia 1830-PTS JL sol
This specimen was lot 74034 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Sol, 1830-PTS JL. Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-63. A pleasing example of this minor due to its excellent strike and impressive Choice Mint State grade level. Only lightly toned, it preserves much luster and crisp detail. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This type, which was only 0.667 fine, was struck with a frozen date until the 1850's. The debased coin flooded Bolivia's neighbors, arousing loud protests to no avail. Assayers J and JL are noted.
