Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70230
SB1021-70230r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70230 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/2 Sol, 1829-PTS JM. Potosi Mint. NGC MS-63. Antique amber and magenta gray tinting mingles with satin luster on both sides of this boldly to sharply struck example made using fresh dies. Highly satisfying for the Choice grade, with no significant contact marks or evidence of handling. Only a dozen at all states of preservation have been graded by NGC, with the present coin tied for second finest." Newcomers to Bolivian coins might think this type, issued 1827-29, to be as common as the well known 1830-PTS JL half sol (KM 93.2a) struck thru the 1830's and 1840's. Such is not the case.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.50 g, 0.903 fine silver, .043 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-93.2.
