Sincona sale 6, lot 4111

This specimen was lot 4111 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,707 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA Fernando VII. 1808-1824. 8 Escudos 1823. Assayer PJ. Lustrous. Scratch on obv. Good extremely fine." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1822-24 only and is quite a bit scarcer than the previous type with Charles IV (KM 81, struck 1791-1808).

Recorded mintage: unknown.
