Bolivia 1824-PTS PJ escudo
This specimen was lot 1049 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "1824 PJ 1 escudo. Potosi mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Frosty medium gold with heavy lustre. A near gem. Specimens of this quality are nearly never encountered. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This portrait one escudo was struck in Bolivia 1822-24, after Mexico and Peru had ceased to mint the type.
Recorded mintage: unknown but probably under 5,000.
