Bolivia 1823-PTS PJ escudo
This specimen was lot 30369 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description [1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold Escudo 1823 PTS-PJ, VF20 NGC. A rather pleasing example for this era at the Potosi Mint, with evenly struck details and appealing toning. A very scarce type struck in the final years of the Spanish Colonial control in Bolivia. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This portrait one escudo was struck in Bolivia 1822-24, after Mexico and Peru had ceased to mint the type.
