SB620-21048r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21048 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Reales, 1776-PTS PR. Potosi Mint. Charles III. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Incredibly appealing and attractive, this near Mint example offers a mix of toning with a good deal of cobalt sprinkled in. Also evident are some hints of underlying luster throughout, with this piece's year playing an even more pivotal role in its desirability." This specimen is one of a series struck 1773-89 in Potosi during the reign of Charles III of Spain. Assayer JR is also noted for 1776 and is priced quite a bit higher. Many of these pesos ended up being overstruck in Brazil for use as 960 réis.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12040, KM-55.
