This specimen is one of a series struck 1773-89 in Potosi during the reign of Charles III of Spain. Assayer JR is recorded for 1767-76. Assayer PR is also noted for 1776 and is priced quite a bit lower. Many of these pesos ended up being overstruck in Brazil for use as 960 réis.
Recorded mintage: unknown. Later dates, similarly priced, have mintages about 2-4 million.
