Aureo sale 238, lot 434

This specimen was lot 434 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 220 euro (about US$349 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1775. Potosí. JR. 8 reales. Brillo original. Bella. Escasa así. EBC-/EBC. (eight reales of 1775, Potosí mint. Lustrous, handsome, scarce, about extremely fine.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. Assayer JR appears for 1767-76.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
