SB823-53821r.jpg

This specimen was lot 623 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1759q, NGC VF 35. Chunky flan with two bold dates, full pillars and nearly full cross (both well centered), peripheral flatness, dark-toned fields." The second specimen was lot 53821 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1759-P q. Potosi Mint. Ferdinand VI. NGC VF-30." The Spanish colony of Upper Peru produced hammered cob coinage at the Potosí mint from 1573 to 1773, with a major debasement scandal and subsequent reform occurring in 1649-1652. The royal or presentation issues are very rare and highly sought after, while the regular strikes vary in price according to the visibility of the date, mint, and assayer initials. This is a common date. By 1759, Mexico, Santiago, Guatemala, Bogota and Lima were striking pillar dollars.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, the first specimen 26.60 grams, the second specimen 26.6 g.

Catalog reference: S-P54; KM-40; Cal-537, Cayón-10638.
