Colombia 1759-NR JV 8 reales
The first coin was lot 1475 in CNG Triton XIV sale (Jan 3, 2011), where it sold for $50,000 (not including buyer's fees). The catalog description noted,
"VIRREINATO DEL PERÚ, Colombia. Fernando VI. King of Spain, 1746-1759. AR 8 Reales. Milled columnario type. Nuevo Reino (Santa Fé de Bogotá) mint; Juan de Chávez and Victoriano del Valle y Mendoza, assayers. Dated 1759NR JV. (rosette) FERDND · VI · D · G · HISPAN · ET IND · REX, crowned abbreviated royal coat-of-arms; (rosette)/JV/(rosette) to left, (rosette)/8/(rosette) to right / (rosette) VTRAQUE VNUM ([He made them] both one) (rosette), crowned western and eastern hemispheres; to right and left, crowned composite column with encircling banner inscribed PLUS VLT(RA) (further beyond); all set on ground rising out of ocean waves; in exergue, mintmark and rosette on either side of 1759. Edge: wreath. In NGC slab graded AU 55, attractively toned. Extremely rare. From the Patrick H.C. Tan Collection. Ex Millenia Collection (Part III, Goldberg 46B, 26 May 2008), lot 1018."
The second specimen was lot 1423 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $114,950. The catalog description[1] noted,
"COLOMBIA, Colonial. Fernando VI. King of Spain, 1746-1759. AR 8 Reales. Nuevo Reino (Santa Fé de Bogotá) mint. Juan de Chávez and Victoriano del Valle y Mendoza, assayers. Dated 1759 No Ro JV. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62. Very lustrous toned uncirculated. One of the rarest coins of colonial Spain, and one of the most sought after coins of the Colombian royal series. It is the highest and only specimen graded Mint State. The finest jewel of Colombian coins in this collection. Ex F.C.C. Boyd Collection (Superior Stamp & Coin, 19 August 1975), lot 1794."
The third specimen was lot 1105 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $60,000. The catalog description[2] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, pillar 8 reales, Ferdinand VI, 1759 JV, very rare, NGC AU 55, Calbeto Plate, ex-Ortiz, ex-Tauler. Choice full strike with lovely deep toning all over, practically no luster and with a few minor issues on rims but only minimal high-point wear and no marks, a well-pedigreed piece that has been off the market for almost a decade, one of just fifteen to twenty known that represent the only date and denomination of the Ferdinand VI pillar type and the first milled "dollar" of Colombia. Pedigreed to the Gregorio Toulemonde Collection (stated on label), the Emilio Ortiz Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1991, lot 218) and the Rafael Tauler Fesser Collection (Ibercoin auction of December 2014, lot 3370), and Plate Coin 1367 on page 389 of Gabriel Calbeto's Compendio de las Piezas de Ocho Reales (1970)."
