Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71235

This specimen was lot 71235 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1751-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Esteban Gutierrez Escalante (E). Ferdinand VI. PCGS EF-40. A nicely struck and centered cob from a less common assayer. With mintmark, two dates, and three assayer marks visible, this is an unusually complete and attractive piece. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio 03/90) Lot # 442." This type was struck for Ferdinand VI through his entire reign. Assayer "q" stamped coins 1744-59. Assayer "E" is listed for 1750-51 along with assayer "q". The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728.
