Bolivia 1732-P M 8 reales
This specimen was lot 1067 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1732 M, unique, NGC AU details / plugged, finest and only example in NGC census. Beautiful full strike that includes some legend (rarely seen on later dates), practically no doubling or weakness, with choice contrasting toning all over, the stated plugged hole at top of cross so well repaired as to be virtually undetectable, this date unknown and unrecorded until this specimen first appeared in 2007 (with hole). As mentioned in lot 1065 above, the Potosí 8R Royals of 1715-32 show 'condors' for ornaments in the legends, rarely seen in the smaller-diameter coins but here rather bold flanking the crown and after the full word POTOSI." This type was struck for Philip V 1729-47, superseding a type (KM 29) which was 0.931 fine. Assayer M stamped coins 1728-32. Assayer M reappears 1738-40 but was a different person. Assayer YA is also known for 1732.
