Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71205
SB1122-71205r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71205 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1730-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Jose Matienzo (M). Philip V. PCGS EF-40. A well-preserved example with bold mintmark, assayer, denomination, and date on the obverse. The reverse shows only fragmented marks but presents a satisfying cross with castles and lions. The surfaces are nicely toned and free from serious issues although some dark patina is noted on the right edge. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio 42 - 03/1990) Lot # 415." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign. Assayer M stamped coins 1728-32. Assayer M reappears 1738-40 but was a different person. In 1725, king Philip V abdicated in favor of his favorite son Louis, who died ten months later, forcing the old king to resume the throne. The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 13.31 g.
