Bolivia 1701-P Y 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71176 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1701-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS VF-30. Posthumous issue in the name of Charles II. A striking 4 Reales piece with ample detail. Despite some die rotation and flatness, the obverse displays a clear mintmark, assayer's initial, and date. The reverse is more impressive thanks to a well-centered strike. It shows a denomination, partial mintmark, and a bold assayer's initial. The coin's well-struck details are enhanced by the lovely cabinet toning on the surfaces. A wholesome and satisfying piece. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Ernesto Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp - 09/1988) Lot # 832." This type was struck for Charles II after his death in 1700. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28.
