Bolivia 1702-P Y 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71177 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1702-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS AU-55. This wholesome Cob is an impressive specimen. Struck on a somewhat square planchet, it offers gently handled details and plenty of original luster. The obverse displays a mintmark, a bold assayer's initial, and both complete dates. While the reverse lacks any marks save for a partial mintmark, its well-centered devices show a complete cross with castles and lions. The elegant dove gray toning solidifies this coin's place as a lucky survivor. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign--unlike in Europe, his rule was never challenged in America. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28.
