Bolivia 1698-P F 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71165 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1698-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Tomas Fernandez de Ocana (F). Charles II. PCGS VF-35. A well-struck 4 Reales piece with great eye appeal. Despite its compact flan, this Cob offers generous detail. The obverse displays two mintmarks, two assayer's initials, a denomination, and a bold date. The reverse tacks on another assayer's initial and truncated date. The surfaces are bright and lightly toned with dark patina surrounding the devices that adds a tasteful contrast. An especially attractive example, free from problems. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1700. Assayer "F" (Fernandez de Ocana) served 1697-1701 and left his mark on one, two, four and eight reales.
