Sedwick sale 27, lot 638

This specimen was lot 638 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $714. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 4 reales, 1697VR. Good full pillars and cross-lions-castles, parts of all three dates and mintmarks, two assayers, VF with some peripheral flatness, contrasting sediment on fields." This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. This date also comes with assayers CH and F.
