Bolivia 1697-P CH 2 reales
The first specimen was lot 918 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 2 reales, 1697 CH, very rare. AU details with faint surface pitting, left pillar 100% full and choice with date and both assayers clear, nearly full cross with second date below, lightly toned, missing in Karon. Pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 9, with original lot-tag 1224." The second specimen was lot 73479 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 2 Reales, 1697-P CH. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS FINE-15. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Assayer "CH" served 1697 only but left his mark on one, two, four and eight reales (the Potosí mint did not mint gold until the reign of Charles III).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, the first specimen 6.56 grams, the second specimen 4.29 g.
