Bolivia 1689-P VR 8 reales
This specimen was lot 73112 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1689-P VR. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. A boldly detailed Cob, with visible date, mintmark, and assayer letter. Some scratches are noted on the lower reverse by the date. The planchet is deeply cracked (as made) and exhibits dark gray toning throughout." This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Royals, struck for presentation, are all rare and nearly always come holed.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 26.11 g.
