This specimen was lot 286 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, 1654 E, PH at top, motto as PLV-SV-LT, rare, NGC XF details / cleaned (Shipwreck Blue Label), ex-Zbar. Very well preserved and corrosion-free, with contrasting toning and smooth surfaces, some flatness but bold details in the off-center pillars and good full cross, parts of all three dates, bold PH and (PLV)-SV-LT. Pedigreed to the Jack Zbar Collection (stated on label). Recovered from Maravillas, sunk in 1656 off Grand Bahama Island." The second specimen was lot 820 in the same sale, where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, 1654 E, •PH• at top, denomination above cross. Broad flan with choice full pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles, two dates and mintmarks, all three assayers, AXF with toning on fields, flat area in periphery." This type was struck 1652-66 for Philip IV. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, the first specimen 6.47 grams; the second specimen 6.05 grams.
