from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 44014

The first specimen was lot 417 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 300 euro (about US$476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1654/3. Potosí. E. 8 reales. PH bajo corona. Triple fecha; curiosa sobrefecha 4/3. Escasa. BC+. (eight reales of 1654/3, Potosí mint, low crown. Triple date, curious 4/3 overdate, scarce, fine plus.)"

The second specimen was lot 44014 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA. "Royal" Presentation Cob 8 Reales, 1654-P E. Potosi Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Plugged, EF Details. A beautiful 'royal' issue struck on a full broad flan that allows for a nearly complete reading of the peripheral legends. The solid strike shows little of the typical doubling, giving the coin superior clarity of detail. The piece was once holed at both 11 o'clock and 12 o'clock (as photographed in Lazaro), but has since been masterfully repaired to the point of near-undetectability. Otherwise only gently handled, the surfaces feature a pleasing charcoal tone. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." The year 1652 saw a massive reform at the Potosí mint after king Philip IV discovered that mint officials had been systematically debasing the coinage in late 1630's and 1640's. The older issue was recalled and melted and a new design introduced to restore confidence in the coinage. The overdate shown here is not listed in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.931 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW. The second specimen is 27.33 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6480, Cal. 438 var, KM 21. The second specimen is KM-R21; Cal-1413; Lazaro-141 (this coin illustrated).
