Sincona sale 83, lot 3399

This specimen was lot 3399 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$161 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OSTERREICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Pfennig 1758, Prag. Gutes sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer (Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, penny of 1758, Praguemint. Good very fine, Small scratches)." The pfennig was the smallest German denomination (four pfenning made a kreuzer and 120 kreuzer made a thaler) and was struck only intermittently in the Hapsburg dominions. The auctioneers file this under Austria but Maria Theresia struck none there during her reign. This issue of 1757-58 was made only in Prague for Bohemia. The Prague mint also struck two pfennig and ¼, ½, 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 17, 20 and 30 kreuzer.
