Goldberg Sale 146, lot 1114
G146-1114r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1114 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $348. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bohemia. White Pfennig 1516. Eger, Municipal mint. City shield, above year. Reverse: Gothic E. Pop 1; The Finest of two graded at PCGS. Nicely toned and sure looks mint state. PCGS graded AU-53. The Augustana Collection." The SCWC lists this for 1516-17 as a Weisspfennig with the Gothic "E" reverse as described by the auctioneers. Whether by intent or by error, the reverse of this example is a mirror of the obverse. This may have been meant for local circulation only. Eger, in the extreme west of Bohemia, is now known as Cheb. The pfennig was later converted to copper. Vladislaus II, son of the king of Poland, was king of Bohemia 1471-1516 but spent most of his reign in Hungary.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, about 0.3 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB2, Donebauer-4208; Schulten-3930.
