Sincona sale 39, lot 4027

This specimen was lot 4027 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780 15 Kreuzer 1749. Prag. Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, fifteen kreuzer of 1749, Prague mint. About extremely fine.)"

The fifteen kreuzer was minted during the reign of Karl VI and Maria Theresia until 1750, when it was retired in favor of the seventeen kreuzer. The type with Maria Theresia on the obverse is known from Prague (shown here) and Kremnitz. They are not mintmarked but vary in the arms depicted on the eagle's breast on the reverse. The type with Francis I is listed for Karlsburg, Graz, Nagybanya, Kremnitz, Prague, Hall and Vienna and bear mintmarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 6.4 g, 0.563 fine silver, .115 troy oz ASW; this specimen is 5.99 g.
