Sincona sale 11, lot 2329

This specimen was lot 2329 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$495 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Rudolf II. 1576-1612. Taler 1593, Kuttenberg. Lt. Doppelschlag. Gutes sehr schön. (Austria, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, thaler of 1593, Kuttenberg mint. Lightly double struck, good very fine.)"

This particular type is a product of the Kuttenberg mint for 1578-1602; the issues of 1601-02 are catalogued as Dav-3023. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century. The Kuttenberg or Kutná Hora mint in Bohemia was an important producer of coin until it was wrecked during the Thirty Years War.
