Sincona sale 54, lot 981

This specimen was lot 981 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,094 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Rudolf II. 1576-1612. Dukat 1593, Prag. Münzmeister Lazar Ercker. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, ducat of 1593, Prague mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Slightly wavy flan.)"

Prague issued two different ducats in the latter part of Rudolf's reign; this one, with an eagle reverse, struck 1578-1608, and Fr-88, with crowned arms on the reverse, struck 1594-1611. Neither are common despite being produced for many years.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.47 g.

Catalog reference: Dietiker 433, Fr-85.
