Künker sale 400, lot 316

This specimen was lot 316 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,433 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Rudolf II. 1576-1612. Dukat 1598, Klausenburg. GOLD. RR Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, ducat of 1598, Klausenburg mint. Very rare, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1598 only at the Klausenburg mint in Transylvania. It is shown in Friedberg but incorrectly attributed therein to Nagybanya. The "S L" probably stands for "Saint Ladislas", who frequently appeared on gold coins of the period. Klausenberg is now Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Its Magyar residents call it Kolozsvár.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.50 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-67 (listed under Hungary; Huszar 1008.
