Sincona sale 9, lot 5338

This specimen was lot 5338 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1200 CHF (about US$1,518 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern Taler 1823. Gekröntes Berner Wappen. Rv. Stehender Krieger mit Federhut und Langschwert. Kl. Kr. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, city of Bern, thaler of 1823. Obverse: crowned arms of Bern; reverse: standing soldier with feathered hat and long sword; extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This and KM 198 are the only thalers struck by Bern between the departure of the French (1815) and confederation (1848). It is variously catalogued as a thaler, a four franken and a forty batzen, all much the same thing.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
