Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 770

This specimen was lot 770 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,518 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), AV 25 francs, 1850. Grande tête. Sans trait entre 900 et M. Très rare Nettoyé. Fines griffes et brisures du coin au droit. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, gold twenty-five francs of 1850, large head, without dash between 900 and M. Very rare, cleaned, fine scratches and die clash on the obverse. Very rare, cleaned, very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This denomination was struck 1848-50 only with this large head variety appearing only in 1850.

Recorded mintage: 74,000.

Specification: 7.91 g, 0.900 fine gold.
